I don't use thread subscriptions.
Any thread that's important or funny enough, I'll likely remember the title and where it was anyways.

That said, this test is essentialy a test where we do 400000000 double precision square roots which we don't even store and nothing else. There are no memory access, only very predictable branches. I have radically changed the loop and compiler flags and essentially nothing besides the sqrt() makes any difference.
I do not regard this test as important in the overall picture. It does not illustrate anything important to anyone, unless someone sits around doing square roots all day.
I might also add that designing a meaningful benchmark is very hard. I think SPEC is about as good as it gets, and yes the G4 looses in floats there too. :)
I'm in the process of figuring out vMathLib. I'm a Java guy, so all this Altivec stuff looks totally foreign to me :(
Never the less, once I get it working, I'll share the results with you folks.
Also: If anyone here wants me to try something, G3 vs G4, or whatever, aside from the square root and integer mult, let me know. I'd actually like to make full featured cocoa app full of test suites.

This chip will follow the general rule of high end chips. If it is used properly it will smoke any "normal" chip, but it won't all the time. One thing to note is that the Power4 970 has a data throughput like three times faster than the fastest RDRAM on the market, and Apple couldnt even use that RDRAM if they wanted. What are they going to do in terms of memory?

It is so easy now to get the codes on the internet.
And 1000 bucks for a piece of software is a LOT for me, but maby not for people who make a living out of it
But these activation codes will be machine-specific, based on your hardware configuration so it's not like serial numbers...
If you don't make a living from it, then ask yourself 'Do I really need this software?'

you see i was just thinking about what all has happened just after the release of the 5GB ipod back in 01. Look what has happened in the past four and half years. The G5 processor, airport express, four more generations of the ipod, the popular iMac form factor, Tiger, panther, the iTMS. The whole intel switch and every single unit minus the powermac has transitioned over to the intel processors, hell apples now can run windows. I look at how much i hated windows back before i finally switched two years ago and I can't believe it.
if this is the stuff apple can do in the past four years, or hell even in the past year, just wait. boring year, yeah maybe but still impressive.

OK, am I the only one who thought that this was about World of Warcraft?
Looks like it :)
I think "Wow!" every time I pass my hand over my Cube to wake it up or put it to sleep. And the G3 Powerbook still wows me as a piece of design. All my ex-Macs get passed on to my kids.

I wasn't talking about DRM or iTunes.Okay, but your comment was in reply to maticus' one about the opinion that "breaking the law is breaking the law". Who was, in turn, talking about iTMS and related issues. Sorry if I lost track somewhere but I assumed you were talking about the same thing.

Uhm why is the program Windows only then???
Wow people are ignorant. It is clearly not Windows only. I can compile it on my mac if I want to. You must not have any idea what you are talking about.

The Apple representitive at the local CompUSA told me that AltiVec contained instructions for preemptive multitasking... but its possible I was misinformed.

If it's not 1.0 or higher...It's beta. No matter how many new features it has, if they can't release a set build at 1.0, then SOMETHING is wrong. What are they waiting for? The new iChat in Tiger to blow them out of the water?
Its just a naming convention. Normally, you're right, less than 1 is beta, over 1 is finished products. Apple has a different naming convention too. Normally, you wouldn't see 10.3 '.5'
also, Adium isn't made by a company, its an open-source program that has a few key developers and a larger group of testers. It kind of resembles MacRumors, with Arn and the mods and then the users.
As for iChat Tiger, Adium is a different kind of client, its not going to compete with iChat since it doesn't have any form of AV capabilities.
(Not out yet) In iChat Tiger, you can talk to 3 different people in a video conference
(Out already) In Adium, you can talk to people who use a wide variety of chat clients: MSN, icq, and quite a few of the other ones like 'Gadu-Gadu', Yahoo, Lotus and Novell, Napster and Zephyr.
So as you can probably tell, these are quite different.

I don't think this bird is going to fly. $479 is only $20 less than the base PS3 which comes with the Blu Ray. For a difference of $20, I'd rather have the PS3 than the 120gb 360. The 360 has been on the market too long for something like this. Some current owners might buy one if their existing unit dies, but otherwise I think most of them would rather put the money towards a PS3. They will also be selling the 120gb drive separately, but for "under $200" it's not worth it. The only reason I can see them doing this is for the HDMI port, which is the only way for HDCP to work, which tells me that the Hi-Def content providers are ready to start implementing more difficult to break copy protection on their discs and current 360 owners with the HD-DVD drive won't be able to view the movies in HD resolution unless they upgrade to the new machine.
You mean $120 less than a PS3... there are no more $499 models...

they might. when i bought my dual gig, a few days later they announced the 300 dollar rebate.
I got compusa to reissue my receipt and blammo, 300 smackers richer. (or 2700 poorer as opposed to 3000 but i digress)
Did you buy from chumpusa or a reseller? or direct through apple? I'm sure they'll probably be cool, if you stink it up enough

the latest version of the G4, apollo, can scale up to 1.6 ghz or more, so there is still another six months there, but maybe moto can come up with better processor and deliver...but if not, then go ibm
