Sounds simple enough - backup and replace 2 files in the .app package. However, this update hosed my AI install. Rolling back to the original files does not resolve the issue.

...*could* actually hurt performance under certain circumstances. If the system overhead is negligable and is the only thing being passed off to the second processor, then three things could hurt performance: the benchmark task swapping back and forth between processors (unlikely if it's high enough priority), extra bus bandwidth eaten up by second processor, extra time needed to snoop in the other processor's cache. You'd have to work pretty hard, but this would result in single processor machines beating/equaling duals. In real life (or even most benchmarks), of course, the duals would almost invariably win.

If you're a student, have you checked out Apple's educational discounts? I think they were selling the 667 and 800 Mhz models for about $1,900 and $2,400, respectively. I paid about $2,600 back in January for a 550 Mhz. :(

my old lab still has a few computers contributing. i am nervous about installing on the computers at my current place because they are quite old and ppl need all the CPU cycles they can get. in the future i will upgrade to some core2 minis if they ever come out. i would love to hack into the library computers at the university but it more trouble than its worth both in time and potential trouble

mdouglas, if you can, I would cancel the order. Both laptops will be updates really soon (they are good now - but, I would want the updated models). You might as well wait a while + get a nice new ibook with a 32Mb Graphics card, faster G3.

Most friends and relatives bring up the clock speed and price. But when they see how the machine looks on my desk, when they step up to OS X and take it for a spin, they see why I could take a speed "loss" for all the luxury that Apple brings to the user experience.
Now, a lot of us rumor-heads are focused on bleeding-edge. And it kinda burns us that Intel/Athlon chips are closing in on 3GHz and we've just broken 1 gig. But we (rumor-heads) are the few, and PC marketing no longer seems to focus on speed. And I believe that Apple is slowly turing more heads out there.
Apple computers are primarely sold to very practicle users. "We don't need 3 Ghz to read email." Most everything done on an Apple runs fast enough, plus the UI (user interface) is so exceptional, that many times you can do more with an Apple, than a PC.
If a standard hammer works to drive in a nail, why try to inovate on performance. Instead let's inovate on style, something the PC world is seriously lacking.

I would love to work at an apple store but the closest one is 30 minutes away on a good day- I'd be spending half my salary on gas :eek: 9 bucks an hour sounds a lot- and it is for a high schooler, but with those darned taxes once you get out of the part of your life where your parents basically pay for anything, it's not a huge amount :p
No, working for $9 an hour and having to spend half of that for gas is not worth it. Perhaps Apple will eventually build a store near you, then you can work for them. :)

What would make OmniWeb even better IMO is if it was able to take advantage of the latest WebCore built into Mac OS X.OmniWeb 5.1 beta integrates the latest version of WebCore.

Apple is known for excellent computers. So why do the live at 1 Infinite loop? Infinite loops are not good things when it comes to computers(i have a computer dictionary;) ). Unless the chose it because 1 mac has had 1 infinite loop, why would the choose such a badd adress?:confused:

Thank you very much for sharing your experience. I had two questions, how was the view from where you were sitting? (Assuming it was more towards the back due to being one of the last people in) and is there any chance at all to meet Steve Jobs? (He has been my first role model growing up)
The view was fine. I didn't have any trouble seeing.
There's no opportunity to meet Steve in the keynote. He doesn't waste any time in entering or exiting, he just goes on-stage, does his thing, and then immediately leaves.
After the keynote, he did make an appearance at the Apple booth on the show floor, but that was mostly for interviews with the press. I don't know if anyone got to meet him there.

We, the ever-speculating Apple faithful have missed a major piece of evidence pointing to the next Power Mac design. In fact, I would have to rank this unforgivable oversight as a "huge blunder."

How many of you recall the red-colored Apple Power Mac motherboard that was briefly listed on eBay three months ago, before being removed at the behest of Apple Legal?
How many of you also recall the Power Mac "prototype" that was briefly posted to a certain French web site, MacBidouille.com, the month prior to the actual release of the new machine? Again, Apple Legal pounced, and the photos and other documents were hurriedly taken down.
Now, how many of you recall that the new Power Mac, when released, was exactly the same machine originally shown in the leaked pictures?
One last question. Do you remember that the motherboard on eBay was the same motherboard layout as the one visible in the spy photo, and was the same motherboard layout that has now been released by Apple?

these g5 threads are never good news (i've seen about 3 years of them on different forums), but what does not help matters at this point in time are the conflicting motives and messges that we seem to be receiving from the industry.
1. New powermac cases are obviously overpowered and overcooled.
2. G4 is way behind in clock speed and news of ibm power4 is tempting mac users everywhere
3. any date within the feb/march 2003 range would be the requisite 6 month range for introducing a new tower.
BUT...
1. would apple really launch a huge "switch" campaign just to trounce all of the newbies' machines and alienate them?
2. the marklar project is now well-known and would be too large an expenditure of resources just for "fun" or a "backup".
i hope (as i'm sure we all do) that apple can pull off some kind of miracle within the next year (something far more impressive than the debut of the gforce4ti). as i said before, these g5 rumors have been around for years and if apple does not take the lead in pushing consumer computing to its limits, we're in for trouble. there are lots of people still disgruntled about the switch to osx, and the widening of the mhz gap will only make matters worse.

Because when you have an established workflow, a tweaked & temperamental RIP, a studio with 3 experienced designers who are Quark demons, about 7 years worth of archived work & templates, very little time to undertake training, a production schedule that has about 150 projects booked in before Xmas... well, then what's a few hundred dollars/pounds on some software?
A transition to InDesign for our setup is something that cannot be done on a whim. I would like to leave Quark behind but the effort involved is not something to be undertaken lightly... this is Quark's trump card.
I seriously doubt that InDesign has 50% market-share as an earlier poster mentioned, probably more like 15-30% tops, less so in the UK but there's no denying who has the momentum.
Not incredibly scientific, but a quick scan of our 332 jobs-in-process shows 211 Quark files received versus 15 InDesign files. That's 63.5% to 4.5%.
And you really don't want to know about that other 32%!

The first improvement that I see is that the small blank window that would appear when expose was used is gone.
