Ever since starting a new job at (insert computer store name), I have been drooling over the many 800 Mhz powerbook display models within our limited A.S.S section (Apple Store within a Store). Now the time has come for me to purchase one of those titanium beauties since I am now in college and without a trusty computer. Actually, I have a Cowpile2000 laptop, but that doesn't count.

Now that I have comitted to buying a powerbook, i'm getting a little edgy now that the Christmas season is here. Just like everyone else, I have been waitig 6+ months and the d*mn update hasn't come yet. Some say November, some say January. Personally, I think that November is the month.

judging the shipping guidelines and the oncoming of Chiristmas, it would be safe to say that the powerbook can come in early Nov. This will leave Apple time to announce the coming of the new powerbook, and for models to ship in time for Christmas.

On the other hand, there is MWSF. MWSF is a really huge event and there is another possibility that Apple will announce there, since there's more media coverage and so forth.

November makes the most sense, I'm just crossing my fingers. :D

I didn't realize that ddr ram was part of the heat issue. I thought it was just the processor that triggered that problem. I guess a produt redesign will be necessary to intigrate such features. Does anyone think the next revision of the poermac migh include hot swappabe hard drives like th xserve? that would be a first and a good draw to converts. no need for firewire drives (if a home user).

That reminds me Arn, when did you take the post counts down?

Ditto. When Microsoft first tried it with XP, it seemed like it was the answer to piracy...........

.........Until it was cracked months before XP was actually released

Umm the activation was never really cracked. It was corparte edition people started using that dont have activation so it was by passed. To crack (more so by pass) the activation on a non corparate copy you have to really know what you are doing and that is when you have a guild on how to do it. I think I read some where that MS is going to have activation in all of it edition for longhorn because Pirate is so rampaned. Plus Pirate copy dont get service packs an only crictical secuirty updates. All the updates to remove bugs and to make the OS better they are not going ot be allowed to get

Activiction is not going to stop the hard core pirates but it will slow down to stop all but the hard core and it makes it a lot more trouble to pirate software.

If thier was no activation pircity would increase. I find the people who complain about it the most are the one that pirate the software. Ones that pay for it just find it slightly inconvent but no really problem with it.

It is the piraters fault that we have it.

The point is that very few international companies feel any moral obligation to the world beyond those the effect the bottom line. The bottom line is only effected by the employees or consumers rebelling. We are the consumers and therefore part of the responsibility is ours.

Fine and I agree but your poll responses are emotional and don't meet what several have said. I want to hear Apple's response on this issue without jumping to conclusions myself; we have no idea what their monitoring schemes are or how they intend to improve them as a result, we have no idea that Apple knew what was going on. I work for a large company that has supplier guidelines and when you only have a buyer visiting places every few months, it's pretty easy to 'hide' things unless you get tipped off.

If it turns out that Apple did know what was going on, then I'll write to them and express my disgust so they at least know we noticed. Whether or not I'd boycott their products on a large-scale is another matter since unlike the Walmart (shop elsewhere), if I want to use OS X, I'm slightly stuck - and I'd doubt whether anyone else is any better. At least Apple have a supplier guidelines document publically available to monitor standards against!

I push FireFox on every single person I come across using IE. As the program is free for anyone and is community supported I have no qualms plugging it like it's nobody's business. As long as it remains free, I will always support and push it others. Once (if ever) they charge for it, I will still tell people to get it, but not as much.

It is truly a great browser, made by some fantastic people. Microsoft may have won the battle against Netscape but the war for the internet is far from over.

I found this one amazing Apple Fact out there on the web:
Bill Gates' house was partially designed using a Macintosh computer.
Google that, its true, I can't believe it! Why wasn't Windows good enough for him to make his own house, huh? Ok, sorry I just had to post that.

did you know apple used to use windows to design their motherboards? why weren't apple computers good enough? because the software only ran on windows! of course, now i don't know where the reference is.

Say they released it next year, then people would all think about buying it rather than the next version of Winblows. Windows on the shelf beside it will be 5 times the price, yet it will have next to no features improved over their current one.

I don't think that there would be a big problem with people not buying macs. I now have two macs and since I converted I have a PC. I would buy a copy of 10.2 for my PC but would not even think of buying another PC.

Oh, it's not really a matter of credibility. It's a matter of perspective, specifically that our Venezuelan pal has been steadily losing perspective for a while now. He decided early on that he didn't like OS X in a totally subjective "I prefer chocolate to vanilla" sort of way. Over time he's gotten more and more anti-X and more and more vocal about it. I think he's working to rationalize his subjective dislike into a set of objective shortcomings, which unfortunately means that it's not enough that he doesn't use OS X. He's got to convince the rest of us that we're blind fools for not feeling the same way as he does about the subject.

I like mymemory, really I do. But I've gotten the feeling he's just one of those people for whom anything that's a change from what he's used to is automatically Bad.

    Daniel

I was speaking mostly of what others see when comparing. Believe it or not it, matters. True, numbers don't mean that much. It's all about the real-world performance. But you know what? Apple gets their butt kicked most of the time. You can quote benchmarks all you want, and for light stuff who cares? But for the hardcore stuff, Macs need to be faster and cheaper. That's all there is to it. They want to entice more Audio/Video/Image editing people, that's what they're gonna have to do.

Why is it anytime anyone critizes the Mac, they are automatically written off as trolls? Are you just going to accept whatever Apple does? They aren't perfect you know (though they do seem that way next to a PC). I've had many, many computers. Several of them were Apples. My 6400 was slow as molasess and froze all the time, but it got the job done (most of the time). I've since sold off or given away all but a custom built AMD running Windows 2000. I would have had a new G4 Tower, but my project lost funding and now I'm moving.

For the record, after I get settled in the new place, I was going to get an iBook and a Tower later (or a new PowerBook maybe). Why you ask? Because video editing in Windows sux. But it still bothers me that a very fast computer I built for a very small amount of money bests a $3,000 "SuperComputer". I'd rather use FCP (I've played with it, it's nice) instead of Premier. And OS X instead of Windows (any version, don't get me started on why XP sux so much).

But not all of us can always afford a Lexus when a Toyota will work just fine (notice I didn't say Kia or something. I didn't buy a Gateway).

Don't get me wrong, I'm actually happy with the 167 FSB, the large drive support, the dual CD Drives, etc. The Dual 1.25s look pretty zippy. But compare it to a PC (don't fool yourself, people do. Don't just tell them to buy a PC if they don't like it, cuz you know what, that's exactly what they do), it doesn't look so good. Apple is a business. WinTels are their competitors. We all have to recognize this. Apple has to keep up to stay alive in the long run.

I'd rather have a Mac, but don't fool yourself. You can build a really nice PC for less than $2,000 (with plenty of basic software that helps you crash Windows even faster) that blows the $3,000+ machines out of the water. You get a nice, out of the box experiance with OS X.2, but is it worth it for the higher price and slower performance. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

I'm just so tired of PC weenies saying Macs are all style, no substance. And like many computer users who actually use their computers, I'm torn. Speed and price, or style and stability?

Only when Real-Time is really Real-Time, only then will I be truly happy.

You think that's bad? In Italy, when someone goes against the "will" of the federal labor union, they're found with a bullet in their head.

Just thought I'd let you know that. :D

PS-In a two week trip to Italy last summer, I was delayed by TWO transport labor strikes...according to locals, this happens regularly. You might wonder how they get stuff done if this happens so often. The short answer is that they don't.

Apple built an entirely new enclosure without a new processor. They probably didn't do this if they only intended to upgrade to something better, right?

My guess is that whatever they had originally planned didn't pan out in the time frame that they hoped for.

Whether it be a new processor (G5?) or some revision on the existing formula (quad processor G4s?), Apple clearly intends to put something that uses a lot more power in these cases.

Even if they intend to keep the old G4s in these new cases for a while, it still might make economic sense to move to a single case with over-rated power supply. That can certainly be cheaper than supporting the manufacturing costs of two completely different, Apple-custom, case designs.

The other reason might be that Apple intends to offer "upgrades" to the G5 for users who have purchased one of these new G4 machines. It would simplify the upgrade program costs (and dangers) if it didn't require a power supply replacement.

I'm a friend of rtdgoldfish, we hang out and shoot the crap and play games. I don't think the area we live in has wifi stealing laws, but you never know until someone gets arrested for it. But since he doesn't run a business or have any confidential information on his computer that i know about, i doubt that there will be any thing the police here can do about it.

He's a pretty nice guy and I was surprised when he called me late one night to tell me what happened, he lives in a pretty tranquil place. the funny thing about this is that it seems like he's been doing the whole investigation while he police just sit around and wait for his information. I hope he gets his stuff back though.

Yeah I want true DDR, cheaper, better displays and a Power4 chip that kicks heavy arse, but I'd love to see a total rethink about Tower design, the same way the new iMac revolutionized PC design. Is a big clumsy tower the best solution we can thik of? No! Come on Apple! Challenge yourselves and come up with another great original idea. And cut down on the amount of wires! It's 2002 and we at least shouldn't have to plug in a mouse and keyboard anymore! Make something sleek and cool! Give us a 1984, Brave New World desktop!
