Dual G5 folding here. Hopefully we will gain some ground when Mac Pro is out ;)

Im curious; has anyone any statistics on how much energy is being used world-wide on folding?

Well my new dual 1 gig at work is so annoying we are all laughing about it. The louder fan turns on every 3 minutes and disturbs us all.

It is fine when this other fan doesn't kick in. I am in an AC environment too. What gives?

    iphone?

and when are usb2 and firewire2 going to be implemented?

and IBM processors (i know, i know - too soon. but i want one).

    and AAC compression in itunes?

just a grab-bag of little treats i'd like to see.

i have VOWED to wait for the 'G5' - or whatever the next step up is - but my G3 tower is looking painfully crap these days, particularly when compared with my bro's dual-gig baby. i want something new, and i want it soon.

And the PC market does all of this at half the price of a Mac. The thing about the PC stuff is I don't have to run Mickeysoft crap on it anymore, I can run Linux now. I'm in the market for a new Mac, but holy ***** Apple, get your act together!

Firstly, come back to reality... most of that stuff is on custom built PCs NOT on mainstream models.

To go through all you said individually:

Apple is no more a laughing stock that is was 2 years ago and anyone how laughs at Apple tends to know VERY little about them

Don't be deceived, there is no mainstream processor running at 400 or more MHz. They are quad pumped 100 or 133MHz buses. Sure, this provides more bandwidth than a regular 100 or 133MHz bus but not anywhere near as much as it sounds.

DDR can get as fast as it likes but what good is all that speed when your processor can not work that fast?

I think you are mistaken with the graphics cards... 1.2GB of RAM??? I think not!!! The card would not know what to do with it all. 8x AGP is a joke which is why it is RARELY standard on a brand name machine. Cards can not out clock a 4x port so who needs an 8x???

200GB Hard drives are not standard on brand name machines either because they are too expensive. Neither is ATA 133 because the only thing it is useful for is running HDs of size greater than 136GB. The absolute maxium a drive will perform at is about 55MB/sec if you are lucky so unless you have 2 hard drives running full pelt at the fastest part of the drive there is no difference with having ATA 100 or 133 and even then you are only losing 10MB/s for probably < 5 seconds assuming you could get 2 drives running that fast at the same time.

We can have dual optical drives... what's the problem???

USB 2.0 is not at all nessecary... it is pretty damn useless. Stick to USB 1.1 and Firewire otherwise buy an adaptor/card.

Dolby is your only real good point. You CAN buy Dolby products for Mac (they are RARELY shipped standard with brand PC) but I have not come across a PCI card with X drivers, YET, only USB devices.

Lastly, Apple is NOT expensive... do a comparision yourself but NOT of customer built machines of brand names like Dell. Compare Apples to Apples so to speak.

an external would be a great choice for the majority of powerbook g3,g4, imac g3,g4, emacg4, powermac g3 g4. already and use and those not sold yet. why let 3rd party suppliers like formac make all the money and if a copy of idvd is included and compatability with dvd pro also. this would be a huge seller if apple branded and supported for between 299-349. it would add to apples bottom line like the ipod. if the looks are stunning and apple adds windows capability i can see the profits. I for one would by one. and when they get it small enough for the titanium they can put it in the topline one. while still giving all the ibooks, and powerbooks without one an external option. great for dubbing and can get its power from the firewire bus. Hook up an ipod to it for istant burn of 4.7 Gigabyte of mp3 files

    Telomar:

I would take Altivec over SSE2 10/10 times and I imagine most other people would as well.
I'm sure Apple appreciates your loyalty, but when you want to do double precision floating point SSE2 is clearly the choice, since AltiVec can't do it at all. That should be at least 1/10 times.

    Nipsy:

Actually saying that SPEC doesn't use memory bandwidth, or that it only stresses the processor is silly. Notice how much the Power4 leads the PPC-970 in SPEC floating point? That has everything to do with memory bandwidth (including L3) since the execution cores are exactly the same (except where the PPC-970 has added things like AltiVec).

SPEC scores (int and fp) test the processor, but don't stress the rest of the system, so even if the x86 processor(s) score(s) slightly higher in SPEC (int and fp) when flagships are tested next year, the actual speed for an end user may favor the Mac heavily
What do you base this on? Since obviously SPEC stresses both memory and CPU (based on PPC-970 vs Power4), all that is left are things like video cards and hard disks, and those are the same for Macs and PCs.

It is true that SPEC does not reflect Photoshop or RC5 scores, and I expect those will favor Macs as much as ever, probably even more so than ever before.

I agree, actually - I wan't convinced by the website, and I'm still not 100% sure of the type, but the advert was good. The computers looked cool, the people looked nice, it all looked tempting. It wasn't slagging anyone else off, it wasn't being superior, it just made them look good. It would make you subconciously associate HP computers with being nicely designed, simple computers used by creative and friendly people. Now, who does that remind you of?!

Yea. Same here. I don't really like the font...at all.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the new Airport Extreme Base Station works fine with DS!

You may not be able to use WEP/WPA/WPA2 with it, though.

What I did (and usually do with wireless routers) is instead of turning on a security protocol, I enable Access Control and then add the MAC addresses of all devices that should be allowed to connect.

To do this with the Airport Utility, you'll first need to select the device in the main window, then choose the Base Station > Manual Setup option from the menubar.

The first section you should see will be the "Airport" category, which will be on the Summary tab. Choose the right-most tab labelled "Access Control".

Set "MAC Address Access Control" to "Timed Access"

By default you should only have one item listed in the table, "(default)" - this will need to be Edited with the limit set to "No Access" (this will ensure no devices can connect unless they are specifically in the list)

Now, click "+" to add a new entry to the list. This first item should be the computer you are using. There is a handy "This Computer" button that will get the MAC address of your computer automatically. Click it. Type in a Description, then click done.

Next, add another entry for you DS...

To get you DS MAC address, insert a Wi-Fi enabled game, and go to the Wi-Fi Settings option (I used Tetris DS). Go to Options > System Information. There you will see the MAC address of that DS.

Once you have finished adding all the MAC addresses that need access, click the "Update" button and wait for the changes to be saved and the router to be restarted.

Once done, there is one final step needed to get your DS online. You'll need to go to Wi-Fi Settings from within a game, and create a new connection. You should already know how to do this if you've used your DS online before. Just click an empty slot, and wait for the DS to find your network, then save. Done!

    Hope that helps someone!

Truth be told, it's actually IE-based vs. non-IE-based, since Safari is based on KHTML, not Gecko (the foundation of the Netscape-based browsers). Also, OmniWeb, iCab, and Opera aren't Gecko-based either.

let me re-explain it. Gecko is just a driving system in netscaped based browser. There are multiple engines that drive it IE-Bases have multiple enginees behind time.

I notice that a lot of people have a problem with MySpace and just make comments that it is a bunch of garbage and useless and stuff.

Ok, I'll admit it is an ultimate time-waster, but I wouldn't be surprised that people that bad mouth it actually have a MySpace and only badmouth it cause they're not able to admit they have one (for whatever reason).

Apple are putting FAR less emphasis on MacWorlds.

It is wrong? How so? If I burn a track for my wedding video, yes, I'm technically breakeing the law, but there is nothing immoral about doing that. No one is losing out on any money. No one is being hurt. He isn't stealing anything. He's breaking a copyright law that makes no sense in that case.

If you add it to your wedding video for your own use then you are not. If you make copies of the video and give them to the wedding guests then you are.
