I'm pleased to see the Folding@Home made the top 10 at number 6. It goes for a team effort by MacRumors members. Most important use is that we are able to assist for gene research of diseases at Stanford.

I picked up a dual-867 this weekend, and it is fairly quiet until the extra fan kicks in... which seems to not happen so much when the room is cold... so I guess if the noise bugs ya, crank up the AC!

Yes, PC's are loud too. PowerMac's are loud. Kick on iTunes and blast some music over a nice set of H/K's and boom. Problem solved. Or, just buy an iMac, or PowerBook.

Yeah, ThinkSecret hasn't been very good.. at all.

They usually cover there bases in every aspect they can. For example, when all the macs were PPC and we were wondering which would go first, thinksecret had something to say about all of them. :-\

Actually, I put the blame on the ADC not for the price of the component itself(entirely), but rather for the limited customer pool that Apple can sell these monitors to because of its proprietary connector. Since they do not sell in high numbers, it costs Apple more per unit to produce, keeping costs high. If everyone went to ADC as the standard for monitor hookups, the Apple displays would be less expensive because they would appeal to a broader market.

So in my opinion, this has alot to do with the price disparity in Apple v. Formac, et. al. (Of course, there is also the part where Apple just charges more for their products because they are Apple!;) )

I put Konfabulator on my Mom's Dull - er, Dell - yesterday. Looks the same, acts the same.

It sucks 'cause now the coolest app on my PB won't let me say "sorry, Mac only!"

Apple should have paid the developers. I'm disappointed.

This is a very typical Compusa story as well...Not typical for the CompUSA in Fort Myers, Florida. There is a full-time rep from Apple on site and always friendly associates around if you need them. At the OS X Tiger event all the sales associates were tied up when I was ready to pull the trigger on my new 23-inch Cinema HD Display so the Apple rep climbed up on the ladder herself and got one down for me. I was impressed.

I tried to read the article, but couldn't come away with anything as mind blowing as the title. Perhaps it's that Finals-Week state of mind...
Can someone sum up in two lines what's so cool about this, and what the possibilities are? From what I read it sounded like they made a better PDF file...

    Tyler Z.

I think this kind off document would be usefull in big companies. I used to work at a bank where I needed to delegate invoices. The invoice had a lifecycle of:

central incomming invoices => delegation to departments => send to proper financial directors => sign or deny invoices => possible 2nd sign => go to financial department => include in financial book => pay => archive invoice

I would imagine that if you can make a single electronic document that represents only the required data for each user, this process can be greatly optimized.

. I am definitelynot a 'power user', but I am a hardcore gamer. And when I see a friend with a year old PC playin Warcraft with less jumpiness then my 6 month old powermac, it makes me want to switch. Power does matter to me, and you cant get much power for the amount of money I have when it comes to computers from apple.

I'm sorry about the previous two posts. When they posted they did not display right even after editing and then they wouldn't let me delete them so here is my third try. Copy and paste rather than pressing the quote button.

What PowerMac your profile says you have an iMac 333. Also I would like to see a $1600 PC beat a Dual 867/DDR. It wouldn't have a chance when you started heavy multitasking and other real world tests. Then go ahead an move on to your games and if you had a real graphics card in the 867 it would beat the PC in that to all while it was burning a cd, getting mail, surfing the net, and making an iMovie. The biggest thing though is that even at 1600 most PC's do not include all the standard hardware that you get in a Mac.

"Punishing Apple" is such a naive thing to do. #1 Apple is just one company, and even if they did assemble their computers in America they would be getting their parts overseas. To be truthful, the idea that if they didn't work in that factory getting $50 a month they would be on the street bothers me. What kind of choice is that? $50 a month or nothing? But punishing one company... or even all the American companies... would do nothing. The change needs to be made over there.

What exactly is HALO effect? Does that have anything to do with the game HALO or is it referring to a spreading "ring" par se?

It is referred to the HALO effect because HALO got a lot of people to buy the xbox because of the game itself. Therefore products that are entry products and produce synergy purchases are considered HALO effects.

    Nope. Don't plan on it.

I have one of the new ones on the Wiimote that came with Wii Play. It's a thicker gauge than my DS strap and the specical addition Mario DS strap my friend gave me.

I'm still thinking that 99% of these broken TVs were the results of Wii Sports Boxing and the person getting to close to the screen, or not putting the strap on in the first place.

A lot of people seem confused about MHz gaps between IBM's PowerPC 970 chip and Intel and AMD's 64-bit chips. Well, the truth is, there is no gap. Here is proof:

    http://www.intel.com/products/server/processors/server/itanium2/index.htm?iid=ipp_browse+featureprocess_itanium2& (http://www.intel.com/products/server/processors/server/itanium2/index.htm?iid=ipp_browse+featureprocess_itanium2&)

The Intel Itanium 2 processor is uniquely architected for demanding enterprise and technical applications. Itanium 2-based platforms enable businesses and organizations to maximize their investments by delivering industry leading performance at lower cost with greater choice than proprietary technologies.

Available Speeds: 1 GHz, 900 MHz
Cache Level 3: integrated 3 MB or 1.5 MB
    Level 2: 256 KB
    Level 1: 32 KB
    Features
    Based on EPIC architecture
Enhanced Machine Check Architecture (MCA) with extensive Error Correcting Code (ECC)
Operating system support: HP-UX*, Linux*, Windows*
System Bus 400 MHz, 128-bit wide
    6.4 GB/s bandwidth
Chipset Intel E8870 chipset, OEM custom chipsets

I could not find information on the clock speeds of AMD's future Hammer processors, but if anyone else can please post them here.

Bottom line is, there is difference in the overall performance of 64-bit chips vs. 32-bit chips; 64-bit are faster in overall performance than 32-bit chips.

Hope this helps. If anyone on MacRumors can better explain things, please do. Thanks. ;)

I like Firefox and Safari about the same. I give Firefox the slight nod because I think competition is good. (part of the reason why I got a mac :) )

I'm sure the new DP 867 Macs are wonderful - in fact I think all the current hardware range is great. It's just that Uncle Steve wants everyone over to OSX, yet some of the machines are still coming with only 128mb (iBooks) which only just enough for OSX let alone any serious software (Warcraft 3 would choke). And 256mb in a professional level DP tower is just daft, Photoshop will eat that just by starting up.

What I don't like is the fact that it's made out to be some sort of favour, when you should not really have to upgrade something as fundemantal as RAM the moment you buy the machine.

The offers not even available in UK (where I am) anyway.

Now I agree with you. That is why you should buy from a vender that offers free ram and charges no tax. That is how we small resellers can still stay alive because we can give away ram as an incentive.

Hey Multimedia! Thanks for the props! Nice to see you are spreading the word. Oh, and we are in Alabama ;)
