...AMD is bringing the Hammer out early beating PowerPC 970 by several months, and they are highly likely to scale much further by the time PowerPC 970 finally comes out.
but:
AMD 64bit CPU 2Ghz
SPECint2000 score of 1202
SPECfp2000 score of 1170
NEW IBM PPC (Power4 Lite) 1.8Ghz
Specint2000 score of 937
Specfp2000 score of 1051
Since when was 1051 ever higher than 1170. Same is true for 937. 937 isn't higher than 1202. So technically, the AMD is beating the PowerPC 970. Who cares if it's at a higher clock. 200 MHz, yay! That doesn't mean the AMD is less efficient... from the looks of it, the AMD is just as efficient, just coming out earlier.

With the new firewire port protectors, you will have to hold it out of the way when inserting the iPod into the dock. The entire thing is not very ergonomic, and thus I doubt that apple will make a dock for the existing iPod. Apple can think of hundreds of ways to do it, but Mr. Ives will most likely have input into what is chosen, as he created the original design. If the dock compromises the simplicity of the design, I doubt that he will accept it.

BF1942 on the PC, I assume? You can't call that playable at all on a Mac because it's still a PPC only game.
UT2K4 is really your only option if you're talking about playing a game on a Mac.

You know that when the G5 comes out that PowerMacs are likely to be the first to get them. And not to mention they're sure have dual-processors in them. :p

So it really does only cost $15 to fill my iPod! I knew Napster was better!
But I'm going to try this on my PC. Can't resist getting free music legally.
Ummmm ... You do know that this is illegal, right? Granted, this isn't "stealling" (music piracy never really fits that definition); it is violatoin of contract. You are violating the terms of your agreement with Napster, which states the music can not be transfered to another device without their consent? You are also possibly in violation of the DMCA because you are getting around the DRM (granted, you aren't decoding the encryption by illegal means, but you are using the decrypting device in an unintended and unsanctioned manner).
Is it legal? No, absolutely not. Is it moral? Not in my world. Can this be prosecuted? No, probably not.
This is only different from Napster 1.0 and Kazaa et al in that (1) it is not easily prosecuted and (2) it doesn't open you up to spyware, any moreso than installing Napster's client does normally.

I would tend to agree with you jef. The only people I really know are Alphatech, King Cobra, and asurace/Durandal7. Now with large amounts of users hitting the much sought after '6502' status, I no longer feel the same sense of community that I did when I started posting (June/July of 2002).
Er, what's '6502' status?
Sorry to ask, but i guess i've only been here for a couple weeks.

After we thought up our company name I checked the .com domains and a page came up saying the domain was available and I should make a submission. So I did, it was a domain selling company, apparently.
Anyway I asked them how much it was and they said I'd have to put in a bid. I asked them if there was any way they could give me an idea how much it might go for before I bid as I was in a bit of a hurry and didn't want to bollock around. Any way it just went on and one and I eventually got jack of it and instead registered the same name as a .com.au
About a week after I registered I checked again with my domain company and it was still unavailable. Then one week later when I checked again it was available and so I bought it for no charge through my normal registery! only cost the normal registration fee of $20 for 2 years.
Then another company started up with the same name as a .net

Alright, lets be honest here. Most of apple's hardware is designed for video editing /graphic work... and no matter what, in the end it all boils down to the software. Sure I can get a PIECE laptop that is "100000% faster" then a mac, but is it going to run Final Cut Pro? NO! So, until you come up with an editing program for PC that WON AN EMMY...AND will render on a 1 inch thick laptop, please post your PIECE laptop on a PC SITE!

Greetings all. Long-time lurker here looking for some advice, suggestions & wild-ass guesses where applicable.
I'm looking to replace the original rev A iMac w/ a 700 MHz iBook w/ Airport (like the Ti, but too many other things are on this newlywed's plate to fork out that kinda dough). It will become the home machine for general purpose stuff: net, word processing, digital pic repository, music collection, etc. What we really want is the ability to do our general computing stuff w/o being forced to spend hours in the computer room of the house. The iBook really fits our needs to a 'T'.
Here's where it gets tricky. With the rumored all new iBooks coming out at MWNY are we better off waiting 4 months, or do we look to purchase mid-November as originally planned?
Pros to Nov. purchase: known entity (current iBook's an excellent machine), OS X + classic, potential price drop if Apple's clearing stock for new model roll-out.
Cons to Nov. purchase If 1/2 of the next gen iBook rumors are true (G4, 13" screen, 1 gig max ram, even sexier casing) I'm gonna be kicking myself for years to come.
Does anyone know when Jaguar will be pre-installed on all new Macs? This is also one of the reasons why I'm holding off buying an iBook now. I would've thought that Jobs would have announced in Paris that effective 9/10 all Macs would ship w/ Jag. Surely they're not waiting until MWNY to make Jag standard, are they?
Appreciate your patience & input. I'm sure these types of questions are asked all the time by newbies.

Anyway, e-mail is an outdated internet technology in my opinion, as there are so many alternative forms of communication (such as webforums, myspace/blogs, and instant message clients) that tend to serve most people as far more convenient.
They all have their place but I don't see any of those alternatives replacing email, especially not for business.
Posts on webforums/blogs/wikis are akin to group emails without the privacy. Occasionally useful but certainly not ideal for private matters. Yes, you can password protect posts but how is that possibly more convenient than sending a direct email?
IM is great IF you're both logged on at the same time. And IM does not lend itself well to longer, more considered conversations.
All the alternatives you mentioned have their place and are useful in the right circumstance but, like I said, I don't see any of them replacing email as the main tool of communication for most people.

I'm one of those "honest customers." My wife has CS installed on her PowerBook, so I thought it wouldn't be allowed on my Power Mac. So this is great news. :)
Um, I don't think that is permitted. Here's the section from the PhotoShop CS EULA.
2.4 Portable or Home Computer Use. The primary user of the Computer on which the Software is installed may install a second copy of the Software for his or her exclusive use on either a portable Computer or a Computer located at his or her home, provided the Software on the portable or home Computer is not used at the same time as the Software on the primary Computer.
