If you are doing 3D animation (as I do everyday on the job) you seriously ought to consider switching to a dual 2.4 Xeon with RDRam and a 128MB video card. (The video card is VERY important) You COULD make your own, or make a parallel processing system, but you will be spending MAJOR dollars.
Even just one dual 1.2 Mac w/128MB card with set you back 3500 dollars. (not to mention that a XServe parallel system could run you into the tens of thousands) Why not spend 1700-2000 for a PC which are the industry standard anyway? Until Apple supplies its consumers with more powerful workstations for half the price they are offering now, no one (with a brain) should switch.
Steve Jobs himself knows this. Trust me, Pixar isnt using Apple computer to do THEIR 3D animation. Thats why Jobs is pushing Apple for the consumer, and is TRYING to get the 64 bit chip together for his Pro users.
I dont think anyone can argue with me on this.
I wish I could suggest using an Apple (they are so damned sophisticated, just slow and expensive!) but in this case, a 2000 dollar PC should way exceed you expectations.

Ya, like others have said, when you buy a new Mac, you don't have to set your region (therefore it's a good thing you weren't asked to). ;) Also, when Apple says "5 changes," they count the first one.
The only time I've needed to set the region was when I got a new optical drive (after the first one died).

I always thought Apple named it as a play on the Command key symbol - when you look at it and follow it, it's an infinite loop:D.
Well, it makes sense to me.

Verizon has a new DSL with 6,000,000 bits per second download bandwidth which is 4 times faster than T1. The cost is about $70 a month for unlimited bandwidth.
You can download a 200 gigabyte file in about 75 hours at that rate. Not bad.
Peter
Go here to see if Verizon DSL is available for your area

Sorry about the math error

Well, after about 18 hours, it finally gave up trying to download the 82 core and went on to a different WU that didn't require that core. It was definitely on Stanford's end. So, I lost a better part of a CPU-day. Oh well. Thanks for the interest, nonetheless.

ATI has had the upper hand in the past and once again has it for about a month now. That's how long the ATI9700 has been shipping for the PC.

Wait, now I'm confused. You don't have to use a download from stanford to fold?
mc68k includes the console version of the folding application with the scripts, etc.
I'm using the graphical client from Stanford. Is there a better/more efficient version I should use?
When I was just starting I didn't want to have to mess with the trickier stuff, but now maybe I'll be able to.
And how would I go about switching from the Graphical version to something else without loosing my work?
Thanks
You can switch to the screen saver (the worst) version without losing your work. Actually, if you use the console version directly from Stanford, you won't lose any work but with mc68k's setup, I believe that it deletes or replaces the current work folder.
Of course, you should wait until the current work unit has finished until you switch at all.

Well, there're some links, but I'm sure if you explore the Apple site a little you'll find examples of how Apple makes connecting machines together the norm rather than the exception.
Basically, mystixman, you can buy Xserve and rackem 48 to a unit and blow away anything, and I do mean anything... make yourself a render farm, have a ball, and the best part is it isn't all that expensive - business wise. I love the Xserve power. (Heck Intell and others have a hard time making dual processors keep from dueling).
It's all that Roswell Crash technology... truth or just MacRumor.

You people need to find something better to do with your time rather than worry about some corporation's patent and trademark rights. You're not employees of Apple, and if you think you're doing a noble thing, I can help point you in the right direction.

Like, where's my credit for providing Macrumors with the link/story, about 8 hours ago???
Guess that 'DRM' has been stripped....hmmm...the ironyWhat kind of credit do you think you were denied? Most submissions are anonymous and if you submitted this story 8 hours before the time of your post that was still hours after somebody else had submitted the same story.
MacRumors normally gives credit to a member who first provides a story when the member has been identified, but that wasn't the case here.

One of the few things that film still has over video is color-depth. With the OS natively supporting only 32 bit color depth I don't see much of a speed increase even in video-intensive aplications from going 64-bit. But if digital video, in an effort to overtake films color-depth goes 64 bit, then having an os with native 64 bit color depth would position apple very nicely indeed.

Like I said, I am definately no processor guru but I was under the impression that the 7440 was to scale to 1GHz and, if that is true, it sounds like they have hit their limit and said "****, we had better push a little more out of this".
It would also explain why the 1.25 is taking so long to be shipped... they have hit the cutting edge of their technology and then pushed a little further therefore making the success rate of each wafer significantly hindered.
I would never dream of switching from Apple to a PC company but I would also not buy one of new machines given:
1) I do not NEED a new machine, I WANT a new machine; and
2) since I do not NEED a new machine, I might as well wait until something comes out in the Powermac range that makes me go "WOW".... just like I did when they first released the PMG3 and the same with the first PMG4.... I thought the QS case was really fancy too but a case alone can not knock me on my feet.

Yeah, it seems to happen periodically with the 'mote and nunchuck that came with the Wii, but not the ones I bought after.
They've figured it out now so they know what to do in case it happens. Pause the game and unplug the nunchuck. Is that mature :p?
B
It's more mature than throwing the nunchuk through the TV while swearing like Andrew Dice Clay. :D
