It's all sour grapes over obsolete releases. Don't worry about it if you're using the current stuff.

Ah OK, I didn't switch to Mac until OS X so I have no idea what it used to be like. I do know that the Windows player wasn't too good though.

Seems funny they would make a typo like that :D

The dubbed ad that stands out for me is the one for for 'Silly Bang', or something... some Eastern European cleaning product advertised with atrocious dubbing and really big hair. Still, we can also make our own very bad adverts for example, every bloody Halifax ad where they get some of their ropey staff to sing some chart hit with the words 'humorously' changed to be about mortgages.

You think that's bad? In Italy, when someone goes against the "will" of the federal labor union, they're found with a bullet in their head.

Just thought I'd let you know that. :D

PS-In a two week trip to Italy last summer, I was delayed by TWO transport labor strikes...according to locals, this happens regularly. You might wonder how they get stuff done if this happens so often. The short answer is that they don't.

Okay, here's a question for all you chip experts; if the AMD Athlon is an updated DEC Alpha chip with an x86 emulator, the what exactly is the Clawhammer? Is it just a 64-bit version of the Athlon, or something entirely different?

So is there anything in terms of playing music that it does better than the default iPod software?

Mainyehc -- I suppose that at the very very worst, you will be able to use the option in the iPod updater to completely reformat and clean install on the iPod disk, and then sync with iTunes to get your music back.

Well, I don't see an eBook happening...the iBook has been marketed at the education and consumer crowd.....and it's not doing too badly (all things considered). Any eBook would, in my opinion, erode the market for the iBook.

Also, I think the iBook will have the G3 (IBM-Sahara) for some time to come....I don't remember where I saw it, but I read how this chip had lots of life left. I can see a FSB increase though....no DDR RAM in any of the consumer (iBook/iMac/eMac) lines for a while.

I would actually buy the 19" iMac rumor....no evidence, just seems a good market tool to draw interest. I also remember reading somewhere how the base will support a screen up to 21" (weight and balance wise)

PowerBook....I can see faster chips and DDR and even SuperDrive.....Pioneer did anounce a portable DVD-R....we'll see

I don't see any new PowerMacs anytime soon. Quite frankly, I'm not going to consider a new PowerMac until the IBM chip is in there, with DDR system bus, some case front ports (FireWire and USB) wouldn't hurt either.

I would like some software though......the final version of iSync, a new Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro, iTunes with MP4, StarOffice for Mac, version 1.0 of Chimera, .Mac for $49 (forever)

    Just my 2 cents....

    Tim

The new one has some improvements in internal layout, cooling, and expandability.

If you do not plan on upgrading the machines while you own them -- then buying on cost alone shouldn't be much of a problem during ownership, since performance is similar.

However, if you plan on doing a lot of heavy optical burning (or see the need to keep optical up-to-date or need more than one), if you see the need a bunch of HDs, or you plan on keeping the CPU up-to-date -- then the newer one may make a little more sense.

if this new device is an iPhone or something, Apple might make it a full on multimedia phone, colour screen and the works, and they could also make it way smaller than any of the competitors phones. i reckon that would be the only way that they could get into the phone market.

The reason I spec'ed the Dual 1.25 GHz Powermac to a single 2.4Ghz Dell machine is that at least according to the www.cpuscorecard.com website, these are comparable in terms of speed. Both were given a score of 88-89% (whatever that means).

At the suggestion of onemoof, I went back looked at lower end machines. Comparing a 17" 800 Mhz iMac against a 1.8 Ghz Dell machine (again, based on the www.cpuscorecard.com ratings, iMac=55%, 1.8ghz P4=62%), The Dell was actually the more expensive machine: $2,148.00 for the iMac (including 3 year AppleCare Protection Plan), $2,296.00 for the Dell. The base price for the Dell is $699, but once you add in a 17" LCD screen, a DVD/CD burner, and software that corresponds to all the iApps, the price evens out.

You could even take the $148 you'd save by buying the iMac and get a full price .Mac account. :)

I can print out all the detailed specs if anyone is interested, but trust me -- I am interested in showing that Apple machines are worth their price.

So for "consumer" machines, the iMacs certainly hold their own in price against similarly outfitted WinXP machines. But for top of the end machines, there still is a price differential to be reckoned with.

This makes me feel better -- can't wait for Xmas so I can get an iMac!

I'm not really expecting much in SFMW. If Apple doesn't come out with an updated PowerBook or revised Display line in the next couple of weeks then I expect it them come out at MWNY. I don't expect PowerMacs to be updated until Feb-March. iBooks could be updated depending on what happens to the Powerbook. iMacs and eMacs could be bumped to 1Ghz. Maybe some new iApp or iDevice.

So do you guys think I should go buy one now(tomorrow maybe?) or wait it out. Or I could buy one at costco, so if a new one comes out in 90day I'd be covered.

the 90 day return policy only applies to computers, tv's, mp3 players, cell phones, cameras and the like. game systems are covered for life, so i would be comfortable buying one from costco now. also, should the system break down on you in a month or two years from now or ever, you don't have to deal with microsoft. simply return it and get another. and who knows, it may even be cheaper later on, so you might get some money back (!).
