    hmmmmm interesting idea guys

see i was thinking the same thing about the oct 1st promo end. It would make perfect sense for apple to come out with cheaper LCD or even a 19-20 inch widescreen one. Apple is defianately lacking in the 17-22 range for a monitor. I know a bunch of us would like something slightly bigger than 17 but dont want to pay $2500 for the ancient 22 inch one.

I would recomend to all you prospective powermac buyers to check out FORMACs two monitors. the 17.4 inch one ($899) goes head to head with the apple one and only gets beat if you add the apple promotion to the price.

Also they just came out with a 20.1 inch one ( too bad its not widescreen) that has 1600*1200 resolution. It sells for $1700 but you can get it for under $1630 wihtout tax if youre crafty. It pretty hard to beat the 20.1 at the formac.com website they have awesome comparisons to the 22 and 23 inch apple displays. the 20.1 is also color accurate while the apple high end ones arent.

I allready gave up on the concept of new LCDs in early october, and went with the formac 20.1, so if apple fails to satisfy its loyal followers i suggest to try out what formac has to offer.

    Tyler

I'm actually not a Windows developer (hence my nick :) ) but from what I understand you can do most of your fp stuff using the P4's vector engine. I also wanted to add to my first post that in integer ops, the G4 only achives clock parity. It goes without saying that the massively clocked P4's will well outperform a G4 in integer.

I think it was Back2TheMac who posted earlier in this thread "x86 plain sucks". The reason why he belives the x86 ISA and CISC are inferior is because Apple put out a bunch of marketing in the early days of the PowerPC touting RISC as superior new technology. In today's world, RISC processos really aren't RISC, and CISC processors really are CISC.

I recommend anyone who still believes in this spin to read this:
    http://www.arstechnica.com/cpu/4q99/risc-cisc/rvc-1.html

    It's most informative.
    Enjoy

Hahaha, a 4" screen with 1024x768 resolution. Boy, I hope users don't expect to read text on that thing. ;) All the text would have to be sized 24 just to be legible.

And the HD? No way. I'd expect Apple not to consider releasing an ultraportable until flash memory based harddrives are widely available and cheap enough.

    I'd expect:

    - an 8" or 10" screen with an 800x600 resolution or lower, or the widescreen 16:10 equivalent of this.
    - 20 or 30 GB flash based harddrive.
    - 10-15 hour battery life (no spinning HD + small LCD = very very low power usage)
    - 256 MB of RAM
    - Modified version of OSX
    - 2 USB drives, no FW.
    - Wireless 802.11 a/b/g and whatever is predominant 1-2 years from now.
    - Gigabyte ethernet
    - Bluetooth 2

$1000 price tag. No, it won't be cheap.

Oh man, totally go for it. I've never owned a PS2, but there are some fantastic games out for it. And whether you eventually end up buying a PS3, 360, or Wii, this will at least hold you over until then.

This reminds me of the rumor of the IBM rep a few years ago that stated at some meeting that Moto was using legal methods to keep IBM from developing or manufacturing a faster/better G4.

First of all anyone can post these stories on the internet and numerous people post them as fact.

Second of all I have a hard time believing that this rep would know much of anything about whether Apple was interested or not.

Third, who cares if altivec is not a part of it. Anyone who thought it would be is an overly optimistic blind Mac fanatic. :) IBM said long ago that they were working on their own unit rather than using altivec. If the cpu is fast enough, not having altivec is not a big issue. Sure some areas might take a hit but for many areas there would be a boost. Trade-offs for more sales. Also how much time do you think Apple put into altivec on their side? I'll bet they can incorporate IBM's version in less time than it took for altivec.

Now who wants to post my points to the internet so others will blindly believe them? ;)

    Not according to this.

That seems so very wrong. I could understand having to have a TV license if I was going to view the BBC, since that is where (I think) the money ends up going. However, if I was planning on receiving non-BBC related material (as mentioned above), it doesn't seem right that I would still pay a license fee that would go into the pockets of BBC.

Of course I may be wrong about where that money is going. As for their web services, the only I have ever used as been to read the news. I like knowing what is going on in the world, and I find it easy to visit BBC's website and get information from around the world. Blogs would be nice to read, if they had anything nice on them.

Also, I think it would make more sense (as mentioned above) if Apple and BBC got together to put BBC shows on iTMS.

It's a blue speech bubble. I'm all for protecting work and chastisting others for stealing content when this is what's happened, but this is a blue speech bubble, nothing more.

Please, don't waste either yours or Apple's time. Don't bother reporting it.

towers can come down a couple hundred and emac could stand to be $999 and imac at $1099

crt imac can go for $599 and os x can go for $99 dollars

but i still prefer the mac os and mac hardware over windows and pc boxes/laptops

Never mind, of course you meant the radeon 9000. Now, if the pb will get the new graphics chip...will it be the 32 MB or the 64 MB variety? I'm hoping for 64...

The pic is worth a thousand words...:D
Interesting setup!...just one little problem...where are the wires? Doesn't the pb need to be connected to the tv somehow?

What are the odds that they'll make an iMac with support for a second (non-mirrored) display?

Just a thought but given that Apple has obviously been working on this for sometime and also given that Apple are extremely secretive, is it possible that a solution for this carbon problem has been thought of.

Also if Apple is stopping supporting OS 9 then the idea of moving to a platform that doesn't support this isn't as big a deal. Obviously then the main problem from what I can see is supporting carbon.

That actually seems like a really great place to work, I love how they say they try to keep all the computers in good condition in their "Mac Nursery".
