I mean a bit more like itunes or Win Media player.

Well, first of all, I thought your thread was going to be a new Google service, Google Predictor, where it tells me where I want to surf to next, and what I'm about to search for. There could even be a desktop crystal ball.

That would be nice :D  lol

pc laptops have 64 MB DDR RAM for their video cards in many high end laptops, and in some home user laptops priced a little higher than the introductory ibook

it's about time to get ibook to 32 and tibook to 64 megs video ram to keep up with the rest of the world

i would not be against having 64 megs of video ram for all apple laptops come mwsf 2003 or just a little later after that

it is no secret anymore, we laptop users are using our machines with photoshop and actually playing high end games on them...ok, mid level games since ibook is currently only at 16 megs video ram which is barely acceptable for this current era in computing

Why on earth don't they make these new graphics cards a standard size? Although they all fit nicely in the Towers, spare a thought for the Cube owners, like myself, who have a limited selection and supply of graphics cards that fit in the Cube chassis (nVidia GeForce 2 & 3, ATI Radeon Cube & Radeon 7500 are the only cards that fit in, and utilise the power of Quartz Extreme...).

Because of the limited supply and massive demand for these cards, we Cube owners are paying through the teeth for technology that is no longer cutting edge. And I hate the idea of getting a second-hand card through eBay, only to find it DOA with no support.

So come on, ATI and nVidia - give us a break. You make 'em, and we'll buy 'em.

I am usually pretty reticent when it comes to '3D desktops', but this seems very cool for pen-based devices...(it might actually be more practical to take some of these concepts and incorporate them into a 'traditional' desktop environment).

I have been using the beta of WMP 11 for a while now with some interest. WMP 11 combines music, video, and photo playback in the one window application. The appearance of the app (and of upcoming Vista) is more like prelease versions of Mac OS X, back before Apple muted the "lickability" of its GUI. WMP is a shiny black with blue accents. It acts as a browser for a good number of online music stores, but most notably pushes URGE.

Having used it for some time, I am reminded of my earlier concenrs over the naming of iTunes.

Windows Media Player is fortunately named because it is a catch all for all types of media: music, TV, movies, and photos.

Now that iTunes does music AND videos it seems the naming is less than ideal. It also brings to mind that Apple may in the future want to integrate iPhoto functionality directly into iTunes, and even iMovie, and iDVD, and GarageBand.

I suppose the singular application could be called iLife, and iLife Lite on Windows would support playback but not editing of creation of music, videos, and photos.

I believe also that with or without these future additions, the source list of iTunes should be clarified with more hierarchy.

I own a Dual/Ghz/DDR and I do love the thing especially having a machine that is as fast as the previous top of the line for a lot less money. I do believe that it is faster then the previous duals in one situation that is multitasking several programs at once. The more programs you're running on this machine the more it shines because it just doesn't slow down.

That said the tests on the railhead website have a flaw. The tests a) are not multiprocessor aware b) are not altivec aware. This leads to a problem the old G4 has a larger L3 cache which doesn't really come in to play unless you are doing altivec aware tasks. So in my opinion these tests have basically illuminated the L3 cache from the test. That being the case you would expect the new machine to shine it has a faster bus then the previous machines. Which does make a big difference.

Something else that I haven't really been shown is the video performance comparisons between the two machines. This is where I expect the new DDR machines to really shine. The new machines with DMA (Direct Memory Access) directly to the DDR from the AGP and PCI bus should see a boost. If the video drivers were written to take advantage of it the cards should be able to cache directly to the system memory with out much speed loss over there own onboard memory. This is why I don't think there is any speed loss with the new G4MX with only 32MB of ram as compared to the previous model with 64MB of ram. It doesn't need it because it can use the system memory at the same speed as it's own onboard memory.

My point isn't that standard PC hardware couldn't work with Mac OS X for Intel, but that it likely won't with much hardware out of the box. I remember all too well the RAM fiasco we had moving from Mac OS 9 to X because the installer decided the old RAM wasn't good enough for the upgrade. I also had a legacy printer, scanner, ADB to USB adapters, and the like that still don't work, so I've had to replace the hardware that I continue to need. My Saitek joystick only works, somewhat, because of a third party app I recently acquired.

So, assuming Apple could even make any money out of this scenario, what's the ordinary user who's looked at MacOS X in a store, and heard all the kudos about its ease of use to think when he rushes home, reformats his hard drive, and installs it, only to find that some critical piece of hardware for him no longer works? How's that contribute to Apple's ease of use legend? At that moment, MacOS X simply becomes another OS product, with the same issues of every OS, except on the Windows side the issues have been dealt with. Yes, he can contact the vendor. (My experience here is that the vendor simply tells me to buy their newest hardware. What possible incentive do they have to write drivers for legacy hardware just for Apple to reap the profits?)

So, I guess I don't basically disagree with you, but I do believe the devil would be in the details...the specific and huge range of hardware currently in use in the PC world. I also believe this would be a catastrophe for Apple. Apple would basically be setting up the clones scenario all over again, only this time it would be with every PC vendor in the world. Apple's hardware would certainly not be able to compete at cost against a barebones PC setup. While that might seem a plus to some, Apple has to pay for all that R&D and industrial design that other vendors don't. How would Apple survive? And finally, would Microsoft just sit on the sidelines and allow another OS compete on its proprietary turf? I think not.

What are the best games for Windows right now?...

I haven't played a windows game in ages, but if it were raining my brother and me used to choose a droplet each and race them down to the cill.

    Wicked good fun!

There isn't a universal yet; but you can run the 'application' in Rosetta (but not the screensaver, because Rosetta doesn't do screensavers,) or you could try downloading the source and building it yourself.

(Or, if you're REALLY adventurous, you could try running the x86 command-line Linux version...)

Just don't make a habit of posting links to sites where you can buy stuff like that. Some people may think that you are spamming, then you get banned. But that was funny.

The biggest problem is the vertical screen real estate it takes up. If those control panels could be moved to the side so my text can use the entire vertical expanse of the screen, it looks fine to me.

OTOH, I'm really liking Pages, so I doubt I'll be buying this, whenever it comes out.

thanks for the submission, this one is actually quite nice.

to eliminate the fps & frequency markings, enable the visualizer in windowed mode, and the big top right button (browse/burn/import) will be a settings cog, where you can access these settings for the visualizer.

It's the only incentive they can come up with that doesn't end up putting a dent in profits. Ram is the cheapest component of the PC right now, so they figure an incentive that doesn't cost them hardly anything is the way to go. I can't say I blame them.

Heh, you really are turning into the old man of macrumors there jef ;) I agree though. It's a shame those you listed (and omitted) were either too contentious for others to handle, or lost interest due to one reason or another. There's so many new members now that it's hard to get to know anyone like in the early days of MR.

Then again, you could always become a demi. Things get a lot more personal in there ;)

Apple will follow its usual strategy.

1st move: 1st gen processors, big numbers, big price
2nd move: slight to moderate price drop
3rd move: 2nd gen processors, bigger numbers, slight price rise
4th move: sligh to moderate price drop

    etc etc

This is what they have always done and why would they stop now??
