I think we may see a price drop on them. I would like to see the 1194 model get a combo drive and a cheaper model get introduced with a CD-ROM drive.

After getting the beta to work after several attempts, I'm getting around 650 PPD on my first unit on a 2.0GHZ MBP Core Duo. I would love to install this on my friends Mac Pro!

Is there a way to limit the CPU usage with the SMP beta, I want to find some balance of CPU usage that allows me to run the fans at around 2500-3000 RPM, they are at 4000 now at full capacity, but I don't want my fans to break AGAIN (I'm 1 for 3 on apple laptops that have fans work for more than a year without making noises that sound like they came from hell)

That it runs like a charm (I've used the terminal and gui versions, but have only used the gui on my g5), and that the F@H (http://folding.stanford.edu/) FAQ has some good info.

Check project summary (http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummary.html) to see details on the protein you're working on, including links to a description (http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/allprojects#1162) (my current protein), which may mean nothing to most of us, but is handy to show friends when describing the lil' app running hidden on the computer.:D

Of course, one should also look at the linkity link in numerous sigs leading to the well written Macrumors Folding info page (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=21908).

IMO, FF has only 1 thing on Safari. Long select bars with scrolling. Having to actually wade through a jillion entries in a scroll bar on Safari sucks. Otherwise, FF is too Netscape like.. an interface I cannot stand.
Safari list shortcut: type part of the item (like a state name or whatever). Press Return to select it.

The only browsers that manage to save CSS properly are IE (windows) and Opera.
I believe that Tiger adds the ability to save an entire page with "the works" from Safari. Anyone know how well that feature works with CSS?

    BetaNews.com reports:

The cat and mouse game has begun. Just one day after Apple closed a hole that allowed a third-party program to access its iTunes Music Store and download content without digital rights management protection, programmer Jon Johansen re-opened the back door with a new version of the software.

Johansen, known for releasing the code to break DVD copy protection, wrote in his Web log that he once again broke Apple's latest encryption. Johansen developed the program, called PyMusique, with the help of two fellow hackers.

"The iTunes Music Store recently stopped supporting iTunes versions below 4.7 in an attempt to shut out 3rd party clients. I have reverse engineered the iTMS 4.7 crypto which will once again enable 3rd party clients to communicate with the iTMS," Johansen said.

PyMusique replicates the capabilities of Apple's iTunes application, and its users must still pay for the music they download. But because iTunes adds DRM protection to songs only after they have been downloaded, Johansen simply left that piece out of his program.

This means that iTunes music downloaded with PyMusique can be freely shared and transferred to portable devices other than Apple's iPod.

As iTunes 4.7 is the latest release available, it's not clear how Apple will respond to Johansen's latest move. The company may be forced to change its software once again and require all customers to upgrade.

PyMusique's programmers claim the software is designed to give Linux users access to the iTunes Music Store. Seemingly to reaffirm this position, a Windows version of PyMusique that bypasses Apple's block will not be released.

    iTunes 5 Here We Come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How does this guy do it over and over??

And now iTunes Music Store works on Linux through this app...

I don't think I see the guys setting up the photoshoot trying to start both at the exact same time....

Of course this raises the question as to whether we are slaves to reality or its masters who choose to create our own reality. I think its better to be optimistic about what apple can offer.Sure we may be dissappointed every once in a while but its either that or living your life expecting the worst so that whatever happens will be better than your expectations.
Maybe we can bring back the Think Different campaign.Use your imaginations, live in the clouds, think martin luther"i have a dream",think superman "up,up and away" :)

I am looking to see if there is a website or directory of some sort that has a list of many, if not all, of the different entities requesting folding support. As a second place prize, I will settle with info on the folding teams, but I am really focused on finding the different projects going on here. For example, I go to the University of Pennsylvania and would love to contribute to my school's research efforts through folding, but have been unable to find anything along these lines so far. A Penn folding project is the ideal scenario and a Penn team would be of interest, though I would likely stick with macrumors if that were the case.

    No offense intended...

... but you buy the flag-ship of the G4s for around 4,000.- US$ and you edit sound with the onboard sound of the G4, which is just cheap crap, connected to some PC-Speakers to the backside jack??? And that's what you bought the machine for?

I really can't believe it!

Buy a decent PCI sound card and you can work flawlessly with a very good sound. The sound-card shouldn't be the problem compared to the money you shelled out for your new G4... And also plug the card into a mixer and the mixer to some studio monitors (they are not that expensive anymore). The sound card will also give you digital in/out...

I am shocked (after 6 years useing Apple computers) that so many new machines have shipped with this fault . I am also concerned that they appear not to have adressed this problem on their support pages, a very bad move ( particularly in the light of your recent takeover of Emagic, makers of Audio Platinum). This could easily undermine Apples reputation among audio professionals.

And I am shocked that so many users again and again are using really "weird" set-ups for their intended work. Maybe you should have saved some money by just buying the little brother of the top-model and spending it for some pro hardware, giving you the tools to really do what you want to do...

All the professionals are using pro hardware and not the on-board sound of the G4, so what's the deal?

All i can say is that i will now be contacting the Applestore where i purchassed the machine for some answers, i fear the worst. Lets hope it's not a sign of things to come!

    Good luck...

    groovebuster

P.S.: As I said before... no offense, but be true to yourself! Of course there seems to be a bug somewhere with the onboard sound in some cases, but it sounds a little but funny that you have the most expensive Mac you can buy for editing audio and you don't use a good sounding sound-card instead of the onboard-sound. When you are satisfied with the sound of the onboard chips I doubt somehow that your "audio tasks" really need a machine like the DP1,25GHz G4. Even an old G3 iMac (same sound quality) is cool for that. My wife got one a few weeks ago and she is doing all the ***** with it... ripping and listening to mp3s and it is connected to her stereo... she never had a problem so far and the puppy is running the whole day in her little home-office. And it is running MacOS X 10.2.1...

I'm using a 2.8GHz CPU on my XP machine here at work. My CPU usage hit a Max of 19% when moving a window. What bothers me about Xp (I'll have to check OS X later) but I am using 41% memory when idle. That's a lot of mem. usage. That's with 2GB of RAM.

A 7xxx chip labeled as G5 would be a tragic mistake. And what constitutes a "true G5"? 64-bit? HyperTransport? What?

The truth is, the G5 is whatever Apple (or Moto) calls it.

BTW, if Apple does use a G5 from Moto, it would be a 7xxx chip. You see, Motorola's naming convention dictates that the 2nd number is the "G" number. Therefore, a G5 would be 75xx. Take a look at the roadmap.
